Outdoor Adventures in Grand Teton National Park
Famous for its snow-capped, craggy peaks, Grand Teton National Park, along with neighboring Yellowstone National Park, is often referred to as the “Serengeti of North America.” Located in northwestern Wyoming, the park—with peaks rising as much as 7,000 feet above Jackson Hole and the Snake River—resides in the heart of one the last nearly intact temperate ecosystems in North America, making it a hotbed of wildlife activity.
Roaming the countryside surrounding the Teton Range are bison, moose, pronghorn antelope and elk—not to mention grizzly and black bears, wolves and mountain lions—while beavers, muskrats, waterfowl, as well as an occasional river otter, inhabit the park’s lakes and ponds. The park’s sagebrush meadows also host a flurry of activity with squirrels, other small rodents and chirping birds.
In fact, there are more than 300 species of birds in Grand Teton National Park, including the bald eagle, calliope hummingbird, osprey, sage grouse, white-crowned sparrows, juncos, sapsuckers, woodpeckers, trumpeter swan and the western tanager to name a few. Many of the birds found in the park are migratory, and spend only the warmer months there each year.
Beyond the incredible wildlife, Grand Teton National Park also boasts beautiful wetlands and alpine lakes, as well as the scenic Snake River. Flowing west from its source in the Teton Wilderness, the Snake River enters Yellowstone National Park then flows south into Jackson Lake in Grand Teton National Park. Floating the multiple channels under the quintessential mountain peaks of the Tetons is an experience you won’t forget.
