What’s the best part of your job?

Getting to be on a magical river in a beautiful place with some very special people.

Tell us about your favorite rapid, hike or camp and what makes it special

Upper Half Moon bar camp, on the Rogue is in the middle of a bend surrounded by mountains and high trees on all sides. On a clear night, when the stars are at their brightest, the dark shadows of mountains that encircle the camp, turn the night sky into a 3D dome. All the possibilities in the world can be seen as you lie on your boat and look up at the sky. The riffle below camp plays in your ears as you drift off and suddenly a shooting star streaks by.

Do you have a lucky charm or special river tradition?

I never talk poorly about the Rogue or underestimate her in any way. Too many times, I have seen those who have, be reminded of her powers. Instead, I always ask permission to safely enjoy everything she has to offer.

And of course there’s always my whale shorts.

What can you not live without on a trip?

It’s asking a lot to drink water without ice 😉 …but, absolutely not live without, would be trusty Chaco flip-flops. Any other footwear just wouldn’t do it.

Fun fact, special talent or favorite guiding memory

Too many memories to choose from, but an all time favorite…
was the time someone put the bacon grease in the trash rocket before it was cooled, and it just so happened, it was the one rocket on the trip with a hole. Got stuck in Wildcat rapid with my feet in a pool of bacon grease, and of course, proceeded to track it all over the boat while I wriggled us free of the rock. Cleanup with camp soap and a boat sponge was entertaining for all, but my favorite was the Bear across the river, with his nose high in the air, *sniffing and saying “hmmm…I smeeellll bacon.” Thank you to: you know who you are, for a great story, wonderful memory, and one of the best things you could be stuck with a lingering smell from 😉
