Important Peru Hiking Information
Trekking in the High Andes takes a toll on the average person, which is why previous high-elevation hiking is recommended for this adventure. Although the level of exertion is only moderately strenuous overall, the minimum trekking portion of the trip is spread over four days and involves 27 miles of hiking at elevations between 6,600 and 15,000 feet on steep and rocky trails and stone paved Inca paths. Although there is also a 4-mile acclimatization trek from Soraypamp to Humantay Lake and back, it is a good idea to come prepared with proper elevation sickness medicine, which can be prescribed by your local doctor prior to your trip. An additional 2 days and 16 miles of trekking is offered in the itinerary but these distances can either be omitted or a portion completed by vehicle. This trip is not recommended for people who have a fear of heights or children under the age of 14 years. We'll share the Salcantay route with native Peruvian farmers who are commonly seen using these trails for transporting goods and livestock. You'll pass by mountaintop vista terraces with gauchos wearing hand-woven ponchos, climb to the ruins at Machu Picchu, and explore the fitted stone beauty of a variety of Incan ruins along the way. Good physical fitness is required.

“The Highlands hiking, lodging, food preparation at the lodges and en route were excellent. We suffered no altitude sickness at all which I am convinced was due to time spent acclimatizing. Hiking less touristed areas (the Inca Trail) offered a unique way to see and experience the country. The local guides were terrific: informed, passionate, and engaged with our group. The group size itself was perfect.”

“This was the most amazing trip I've ever been on. It far exceeded my expectations. The rafting was wonderful, the treks were challenging and exhilarating, and the lodges were absolutely luxurious at the end of those hikes. Everything seemed very well-planned and went very smoothly.
If I didn't have so many places in the world left to explore I'd go again next year. It was absolutely fantastic!
All the guides were great! Their personalities and styles were very diverse and they were all knowledgeable and fun to be with.”

“I loved being in places where there were no other people! And I loved our guides - Pepe Negro with Explorandes was an amazing asset. His knowledge, personality, command of English, ability to deal with situations, experience - made for a great leader/guide. Lars too was great. He and Pepe made a great team and really worked well together. So much fun to be around. They really enhanced my experience!!
I had a great time and will definitely do another OARS trip. I have recommended your trip to a lot of people already and I know a few seriously considering it.”
