What’s the best part of your job?
Doing what I love everyday and sharing it with new people. And sleeping under the stars most nights.
Tell us about your favorite rapid, hike or camp and what makes it special
My favorite rapid is Hells Kitchen on the Tuolumne. Fun, technical, fast and great views of the canyon right before you enter it.
Do you have a lucky charm or special river tradition?
On the Royal Gorge section of the Arkansas River just above Sunshine rapid there is a face in the cliffs above. It is the River God, Scagg or Ernie, depending on who you ask. When starting out guiding I was told to always say hello to him and ask for safe passage. On a high water above recommended closure trip, I did not and had a flip there. I won’t forget to say hello anymore.
What can you not live without on a trip?
I’m not real sure. I think I have probably forgotten everything that I thought was a necessity at one time or another.
Fun fact, special talent or favorite guiding memory
I’ve been told that I have more jokes than anyone else. Most are very good though.
