What’s the best part of your job?
Working in one of the most beautiful places on Earth! Sharing my love for the Canyon with others, watching it transform them, and helping facilitate the magic that is created when one successfully traverses rim to rim, their lifelong dream!
Tell us about your favorite rapid, hike or camp and what makes it special
Rapid: Horn Creek. It’s a wild, roller coaster of a ride! Has me screaming with glee every time!
Hike: Really any one below the rim. Hiking the Thunder River/Deer Creek loop from the north rim on the Bill Hall trail is pretty epic. So much beauty and diversity in one hike: waterfalls, creeks, slot canyons, lush vegetation…
And finding and exploring remote, hidden oases in all the nooks and crannies accessed from the river is pretty special.
Camp: too many to name! Monument Creek on the Tonto trail is spectacular. Nankoweap camp on the river is extraordinary. The Canyon opens up there and the views will take your breath away.
Do you have a lucky charm or special river tradition?
At least once on a river trip, I will wake up in the middle of the night specifically to stargaze. The night sky in the Canyon is like no other! To see a billion stars framed by the silhouette of the Canyon walls is a special treat. And I always manage to see a shooting star 🙂
What can you not live without on a trip?
For both hiking and rafting, a sarong that I periodically dunk in the water and drape over me to keep me cool and protected from the sun. It can also double as a towel. Skirts! Lots of skirts. 🙂 Chaco flips in summer and ditch boots in the cooler months.
Fun fact, special talent or favorite guiding memory
