Itinerary & Map

Itinerary at a Glance

We pride ourselves in running a relaxed and flexible schedule. Every corporate team building trip on the South Fork American River is different depending upon the group, other trips on the water, and sometimes the weather. The following is a sample of what your trip might be like:

  • 11:30 AM – Meet at the OARS American River Outpost and gather with your colleagues at the camp dining area for a delicious deli lunch spread.

Once everyone has a chance to fuel up for the adventure, your guides will deliver an orientation and safety talk and fit you with your helmet and PFD (wetsuits and splash tops also included on all early-season and cold weather trips).
  • 1:00 PM – We’ll take a short walk down to the beach where the rafts will be waiting, and then launch right from camp.

The first part of your adventure on the South Fork American starts off mellow with several miles of splashy, Class II warm-up rapids like Barking Dog and Highway Rapid. Practice your paddling skills and enjoy plenty of swimming opportunities, including Swimmers’ Rapid, a fun wave-train rapid that lets paddlers experience what it feels like to swim a rapid (if you want), before entering the ever-exciting Gorge.

As anticipation builds for the exciting rapids head, enjoy the beautiful river scenes, keep an eye out for redtail hawks soaring above, and river otters swimming near shore.

Once you spot the “Lollipop Tree,” which marks the official entrance to the Gorge, it’s go time! As the canyon walls narrow, the pace of the river quickens, and team work is the name of the game as you approach an action-packed series of wild Class III rapids like Fowler’s Rock, Satan’s Cesspool and Hospital Bar.  Don’t forget to smile for the photographers’ cameras! These photos will surely be the water cooler topic of choice for days to come.

As we get closer to the take-out, one last “Surprise” rapid may sneak up on the group to provide an exciting finale to your day on the water. After the main rapids, and depending on the water levels, the guides may tie the boats together for a short tow-out to our take-out at the Salmon Falls Bridge. Here, our shuttle vehicles will be waiting to take us back to camp.
  • 5:00 PM – Back at the Outpost, bathroom facilities and hot showers will be available for those who want to freshen up before dinner in camp. The evening provides another chance to gather as a group, swap stories about the day’s adventure and enjoy a delicious guide-prepared dinner.
  • 6:00 PM – Head home refreshed and with full bellies. Groups can also opt to camp overnight at our peaceful riverside hideaway. Ask us about pricing for your group.
