What’s the best part of your job?

I love paddling through flat water — talking to my paddlers, telling jokes, exchanging stories.

I love floating in the eddy after a big rapid — seeing the adrenaline in my paddlers’ faces, hearing it in their voices..

I love sharing the quiet awe of nature.

My best memories of the river are from places which have very little current.

Tell us about your favorite rapid, hike or camp and what makes it special

Dropping into Sunderlands Shoot…it’s like riding a pillow line on my snowboard.

Do you have a lucky charm or special river tradition?

I wear an amethyst pendant, from my grandma, for peace and balance around my neck. I keep a clear quartz crystal, from a young girl who paddled in my boat, for wisdom and clear thought in my dry box. I don’t go on the river without them.

What can you not live without on a trip?

12 rambling stories, 57 dad jokes, one good riddle, and a tub of hummus.

Fun fact, special talent or favorite guiding memory

I’m working on publishing my first collection of poetry.
