Tell us about your favorite rapid, hike or camp and what makes it special
I’m surprised to find that this is my answer, but its Lava Falls in the Grand Canyon. It makes me accept my fear, and accept that there are powers at work much greater than myself that I can only hope will smile in my direction on that given day when I find myself below Lava giving thanks to the river gods for one more decent run right-side up!
Do you have a lucky charm or special river tradition?
I have a blue rubber Buddha keychain my friends gave me 10 years ago as a joke at the end of a trip down the Tuolumne River in California – it now lives in my ammo box and I never row without it.
What can you not live without on a trip?
A beer at the end of the day….I pull into camp after a great day on the river, work in the hot beating sun to set up camp and help our guest get settled, then head down to my boat/home/Eden and crack one open. That “Kah-chah” is my happy noise for another day well spent and well lived.
Fun fact, special talent or favorite guiding memory
Its a long story, but every time I row past the Ross Wheeler camp in the Grand Canyon I am moved to remember an epic hiking trip gone bad that brought me to the river 15 years ago…it was life changing and why I now count the river (any river) as home. The perspective is mind-blowing.
