What’s the best part of your job?

Waking up every morning in a gorgeous place with happy folks and living a simple life boating the world.

Tell us about your favorite rapid, hike or camp and what makes it special

Favorite rapid is usually the one I am in, but Hermit in a dory at 23 thousand CFS is always exciting. Favorite camp is on the knob in Alsek Lake. Icebergs, cocktail ice and beauty everywhere. Hiking to thunder river in Grand Canyon has so many facets and incredible surprises that it rates as one of the best in the world.

Do you have a lucky charm or special river tradition?

Before big rapids I say a little prayer from the Zambezi river valley that means river god please help me.

What can you not live without on a trip?

Don’t have it, don’t need it…propane hoses for the stove help though!

Fun fact, special talent or favorite guiding memory

I escaped Kansas, built my own boat and became an international helicopter ski guide and river guide. It all seems fantastic, unlikely and amazing. I wouldn’t trade any of it.
