AMERICAN RIVER ASSISTANT MANAGER

OARS, one of the most respected outfitters in adventure travel, is seeking a full-time, seasonal American River Assistant Manager for our American River Outpost in Lotus, CA.

 

PURPOSE

 

  • The American River Assistant Manager, in collaboration with the Regional Manager, is responsible for the orderly operation of all trips originating from the American River Outpost, including, but not limited to, the South Fork, Middle Fork and North Forks of the American River, while maintaining the highest standards for safe trips and guest satisfaction.
  • The American River Assistant Manager, as a member of the management team, is responsible for maintaining effective communication between the Regional Manager and the main office, guides, and other operational staff.
  • The American River Assistant Manager must take an active role in learning, observing, and defining what needs to be done to be successful in this role as the tasks are dynamic and ever-changing.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

Most tasks are done in collaboration with the Regional Manager. Tasks that are to be completed entirely by Assistant Manager are indicated with an “A” for “Autonomous”


Office Duties

  • Stay abreast daily of all aspects of the crew schedule, vehicle logistics, and trip details
  • Be familiar with Risk Management Plan and Emergency Evacuation protocols
  • Submit receipts and invoices weekly and maintain records for purchases
  • Assist with payroll related to drivers, jetski, and hourly work with Regional Manager’s approval and other payroll areas as needed
  • Assist with approving Trip Leader Reports and proper documentation
  • Schedule and maintain shuttles for all trips and keep drivers informed 5-7 days ahead with updates on changes daily if needed (A)
  • Verification and tracking of all certifications and hiring paperwork (A)
  • Filing of employee documents and receipts (A)
  • Assist with staffing and personnel tasks (interview, hiring paperwork, end of season reviews, progression)

Facilities

  • Monthly Outpost Facilities Inspections and documentation (make or schedule repairs as needed) (A)
  • Primary Equipment Manager- facilitate the repair, maintenance, record keeping, and organizing of rafting and Outpost equipment; reports repairs and needed replacements to Regional Manager (A)
  • Responsible for ensuring that Guide living areas are kept to a clean and safe standard weekly, assigning duties to staff as needed. (A)

Drivers and Vehicles

  • Supervise all CDL drivers and report any issues to Regional Manager
  • Train guide drivers on proper operation of OARS vehicles and document (A)
  • Ensure all drivers are following DOT and FMCSA Regulations (A)
  • Check and maintain all Driver Record of Duty Logs and ensure accurate reporting (A)
  • Keep vehicles stocked with appropriate paperwork and maintain cleanliness (A)
  • Work with in-house and hired mechanics to maintain proper maintenance on fleet

On River Manager

  • Set a good example and be a role model for all OARS guides
  • Ride alongs with guides to assess skills, completing a writeup for guide and regional manager (A)
  • Assist in training staff in local history, geology, and other interpretation to use with guests
  • Solid understanding of river management regulations for all sections

Other

  • Assist the Regional Manager with daily operations and solve problems as they arise
  • Manage, coach, and assess all staff in coordination with Regional Manager
  • Assist in supervising pre/post-trips daily
  • Assist in training guides to plan, pack, use, and clean-up trip food and gear
  • Assist with assigning and supervising camp and warehouse work throughout the season
  • Available by phone or in-person and address any needs as necessary while the manager is unavailable
  • The assistant manager duties could include many other aspects of the operation including but not limited to driving shuttles, driving the jet ski, errands to town, covering the store, covering the food room, vehicle maintenance, facilities maintenance, and office duties

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

  • Currently, we can only accept applicants who can legally work in the United States
  • Minimum of 21 years old
  • Ideal candidate will be available on-site March 16th- Oct 10th
  • Current Driver’s License and clean driving record
  • Must possess, or be willing to acquire, a Commercial Driver License with passenger endorsement
  • Must possess, or be willing to acquire, a CA Food Handlers License prior to the start of the season
  • Must possess, or be willing to acquire, a CA Boaters Card prior to the start of the season
  • Class IV rafting experience preferred
  • Customer service experience or superb people skills
  • Capable of working long hours
  • Physically fit (must be able to lift 50 lbs)

  • Basic computer skills
  • Ability to adapt to fluctuating hours of work on a daily basis

 

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

 

  • The OARS American River operation experiences extreme weather, ranging from winter conditions, including early season snow and freezing temperatures, to triple-digit heat during the summer
  • Wildfires are a common occurrence and can drastically diminish air quality
  • Stressful river conditions and last-minute changes associated with bookings

COMPENSATION

 

  • $750 to $850 per week, depending on experience
  • Duration of season: 30 weeks per year, March 16, 2020, through October 10th, 2020.
    • General expectations:
      • 10 weeks at 5/days per week
      • 20 weeks at 6/days per week
      • Assistant Manager in Office/Camp 3 days/week, Assistant Manager on River 3 days/week
    • Daily and hourly work outside the term of this contract requires the Regional Manager’s prior approval of time estimate and submission of the detailed timesheet. Time will be paid at $150 per day or $15 per hour.
    • $85 per month towards phone reimbursement for 6 months (April-September)
