ANGELS CAMP, CA – MARCH 20, 2012 – O.A.R.S.’ Grand Canyon Dory trip on the Colorado River has been selected by Outside Magazine as a recipient of its first-ever Active Travel Awards. The classic Grand Canyon Adventure, run in small, rigid and charmingly elegant boats, from the world’s leading river outfitter, O.A.R.S., was honored as part of the Hall of Fame, highlighting seven of Outside’s all-time favorite life-list adventures. The full list of award winners is published in the April issue of Outside magazine, available on newsstands and online at Outside Online.
To select this year’s awards, Outside tapped a global network of correspondents to showcase a definitive roundup of the best new adventures, exotic retreats, beaches, local food, bars with a view, on-time airlines, screaming deals, gorgeous islands, and more. The awards reflect more than just a collection of unforgettable trips—it’s a road map to life-changing experiences. The issue also highlights a list of the best online travel tools, as well as an inventory of Outside’s all-time favorite destinations.
“O.A.R.S. has been outfitting transformative experiences for people ever since I led our first trips down the Colorado through the Grand Canyon in 1969,” commented O.A.R.S. founder George Wendt. “We routinely hear from our guests that their trip through the Grand Canyon was the best trip of their entire life. It is, of course, an honor to be recognized for an adventure that is such a significant part of our heritage, but it’s the feedback we receive from our guests that’s the most humbling.”
O.A.R.S.’ award-winning float through the greatest natural wonder in North America is available April through October and trips tend to book up more than a year in advance. In addition to inflatable raft adventures, O.A.R.S. also uses wood- and fiberglass-hulled dories on select trips each year, providing a unique way to experience the more than 227 miles of the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon. Trips range from 4 to 19 days, starting at $1847 per person.
In celebration of the Outside Active Travel Awards, Outside launched the “What Trip Are You?” App for Facebook, which allows members of the Outside community to take an adventure travel quiz to determine what type of vacation best suits their adventure style. There are five categories: Enlightened Explorer, Powder Hound, River Runner, World Traveler, and Adrenaline Junkie. O.A.R.S. is excited to partner with Outside to provide a Grand Canyon dream trip for one of the five grand prize winners.
