SUP on the river? Who knew?

As the fastest growing water sport in the country, stand up paddleboards (SUPs) are a fun, family-friendly way to get all ages out and playing on the water.  For both beginner and veteran SUPers alike, hopping on a board with a paddle in hand is a way to spice up the calm sections of a river, and an exhilarating way to ride the rapids on your next river trip with O.A.R.S.  You can even fish from a SUP!

What exactly is a SUP?  A SUP looks very similar to a surfboard, but has more stability and buoyancy, is propelled with a paddle while standing up, and can be taken on oceans, lakes, rivers or even pools.   O.A.R.S. paddleboards are rigid like a surfboard, but inflatable like a raft, and at 10+ feet long and close to three feet wide, our SUPs are surprisingly stable.  Paddling a SUP provides one of the best perspectives to be had on the river, with a full view of the scenery in front of you, and a clear view of the water passing beneath you.  If you’re looking for a new way to travel down river, grab a board, paddle, and PFD, and let the explorations begin!

Not only does paddling a SUP provide a new and wider view of any river, it is also becoming a popular way for athletes to cross-train.  Stand-up paddleboarding is an aerobic, full-body work out for the core, arms, legs, and back, and enhances balance and coordination.  What is one of the best parts of paddling a SUP during an O.A.R.S. trip?  You can bail off into the water whenever you start to break a sweat!

O.A.R.S. offers Stand Up Paddleboards on two of our popular river trips:

Gorges of the Lower Salmon
How many of your friends can say they have paddled down one of the longest free-flowing rivers in the lower 48? Now imagine doing it standing up, taking the views of the beautiful and historic Lower Salmon River canyons in stride; like walking on water.  The Lower Salmon River in Idaho is the perfect combination of flat, glassy water interspersed with exciting Class III rapids, making it the perfect place to try out one of our SUPs.
Interested in learning more about the art of stand up paddleboarding in whitewater?  Join us for our 4-day Stand Up Paddleboard Experience on the Lower Salmon and learn the essentials of the SUP, including proper paddle strokes and braces, reading whitewater and navigating rapids.  This is a unique, all-inclusive SUP package!

Colorado River through Cataract Canyon
Rafting in Utah on the Colorado River through Cataract Canyon has it all: breathtaking scenery, easy floating and Class III whitewater.  With the addition of stand up paddleboards to our list of boat options, you can now experience the Colorado River through Cataract Canyon in a whole new way!  With plenty of calm water to experiment and play, followed by fun and challenging whitewater, Cataract Canyon offers a Utah adventure vacation suitable for the whole family.

Interested in a SUP on another river? Give us a call at 1-800-346-6277. We can bring stand up paddleboards on Idaho’s Main Salmon & the Snake River through Hells Canyon as well as on the Green River & Yampa River in Dinosaur National Monument and the San Juan River in southern Utah.
