OFF THE BEATEN PATH

By Elizabeth Quinn

Why sweat through a treacherous hike or subject yourself to the whims of a stubborn pack animal when you can experience the majesty of one of the world’s most impressive natural wonders while floating down the cool waters of the Colorado River? The Grand Canyon, which ranges in elevation from 2,400 feet to over 7000 feet above sea level and in some places is one mile deep and 18 miles wide, is an attraction not to be missed. OARS, an outdoor adventure outfitting company that was the first to receive a license to guide non-motorized boats down the river, has been specializing in rafting through the canyon for over 35 years.

Because there are miles of river and gorge to explore, OARS offers trips in varying lengths in different stretches of the canyon. Groups travel with experienced guides who, in addition to steering you downstream, can lead hikes, wildlife watching trips, and a number of other excursions. With an option for either fully catered camping or lodge-based outings, rafting through the Grand Canyon is an adventure that can be tailored to the age and skill level of any perspective participant.
